An accounting career isn’t one ladder. It’s a landscape.

See how accounting and finance careers really work: the roles, paths, trade-offs and moves that aren’t obvious from job descriptions.

Seen from behind, a person stands beside one plain wooden stepladder, looking out over rolling hills scattered with ladders pointing in different directions.

Why EdgeUp exists

From audit to commercial finance. Each move opened up my career.

  1. Audit and assurance · PwC

Audit was all I could see

I started in audit and only thought about audit. Working in industry didn’t seem possible.

  2. Financial reporting · ASX 100

    The most common crossover

My first move was into financial reporting in ASX 100 finance teams. It showed me how much more an accounting career holds.

  3. Data analysis and Power BI

    Skills that opened a door

Data analysis, shown in Power BI, put me alongside the management reporting team. I saw what they actually do.

  4. Management reporting

    A path few people knew

Colleagues in financial reporting found this switch hard because they didn’t know how to make it. Here I saw that these skills travel across industries.

  5. Commercial finance

    Where it all comes together

Now I’m in commercial finance, where data analysis is critical and financial reporting still matters. It shows me even more of where an accounting career can lead.

The Mainline isn’t the only way forward. My career is the proof.

So I built EdgeUp Nodes. A map of accounting and finance careers.

  1. The landscape

    Start with the whole landscape.

Accounting and finance careers, family by family: financial reporting, management reporting, FP&A, commercial finance and more.

  2. Nodes

Open a family to see its Nodes.

A Node is a role you’d recognise, such as Financial Accountant or Finance Manager.

  3. Mainline Pathway

    See the conventional progression.

Many people start without knowing the Mainline in their own family. Titles like Group Accountant describe the type of work, and can sit at different levels.

  4. EdgeUp Pathways

    Then look beyond the Mainline.

EdgeUp Pathways are deliberate moves off the Mainline, into another family, another industry, or finance work beyond accounting.

Each Node explains the role. Then it shows what the job is really like.

Financial Reporting Mainline Pathway

Financial Accountant is the first Node on this pathway, followed by Senior Financial Accountant and Finance Manager.

Node

Financial Accountant

The role

Close and support the accounts, explain their accounting treatment, and prepare reliable financial reporting for the part of the organisation you cover.

  • Period-end close: journals and accruals, so the period’s activity lands in the right place.
  • Balance-sheet reconciliations: what supports each balance, and what’s still unresolved.
  • Reporting from the accounts: schedules or a division pack that ties back to the ledger.
  • Accounting treatment and controls: applying policy to transactions, and keeping evidence that controls worked.

In reality

Both are Financial Accountants. Their days look very different.
